France does not reward being crossed in a straight line. Paris, Provence, the Basque coast and the Alps keep different seasons and different hours, and the journey between any two of them is almost always longer than it looks on a map.
The TGV rewrites that arithmetic where it runs: Paris to Lyon in two hours, Paris to Marseille in three. Everywhere else a car is the condition for seeing anything but town centres, and that is what shapes most itineraries.

25ToulonFrance1 activityMay to June and September, for most of the country: long days, everything open, and crowds below their peak. July and August put the French themselves on the coasts, where prices double. Winter still works for Paris and the cities, and it is the Alps' season.
The Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Mont-Saint-Michel in summer, the Loire châteaux on spring weekends, and anything that runs in a small group — Burgundy and Champagne cellars take about ten people per slot. The rest can still be decided on the day, especially off season.
Not in the cities or at the major sites, where English is common. In rural France it is much less so, and that is where a guided visit in your own language changes what you actually understand of a place.
