About this experience
This full-day trip allows you to visit the World Heritage Sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, starting with a pick-up from Naples and a bus transfer to the Pompeii ruins. A tour assistant will be present on the bus. Once in Pompeii, you will spend approximately 2 hours exploring the site, where you can learn about the daily life and customs of ancient residents. Key highlights include the large theater, necropolis, thermal baths, and well-preserved houses of the affluent citizens. A light lunch is included at a local restaurant. Following lunch, you will proceed to Herculaneum, where you can explore the ruins independently. The preservation of Herculaneum, thanks to the mud and volcanic debris, provides a more detailed insight into the lives of its inhabitants.

Archaeological Park of Pompeii
At the time of the dramatic eruption, Pompeii counted about 11.000 inhabitants, while Herculaneum had a population of some 5.000 people. A number of emperors and aristocrats had their holiday villas in these cities. One day, in 79 AD, several meters of ashes buried the whole area in a matter of few hours. Centuries later, in 1748, under the Bourbons government, excavation works started. The discovery was greeted with enthusiasm as it added great wealth to the kingdom and inspired the neoclassicism movement in Europe. Nowadays, the ruins of Pompeii are amongst the most visited archaeological sites in the world, while Herculaneum is renewed for its Villa dei Papiri containing a library of over 1800 papyruses. Visit of the excavations (approx 2 hrs) and if time permits also of a coral and cameos factory to admire the production procedure carried on by expert artisans
