Terracotta route: Florence - San Gimignano - Siena
San Gimignano is an Italian town built on a hill in Tuscany, south-west of Florence. Surrounded by 13th-century walls, the old town is organised around Piazza della Cisterna, a triangular square lined with medieval houses. Several medieval towers rise above the town, including the stone Torre Grossa. The Collegiate Church of San Gimignano is a 12th-century church whose Santa Fina chapel is decorated with frescoes by Ghirlandaio. Siena, a city located in Tuscany, in central Italy, is characterised by its medieval brick buildings. In Piazza del Campo, the central square shaped like a shell, stand the Palazzo Pubblico, the Gothic town hall, and the Torre del Mangia, a narrow 14th-century tower offering a panoramic view from its white travertine summit.
