About this experience
This pilgrimage includes visits to three significant sanctuaries in Gipuzkoa. Beginning at the Sanctuary of Loiola in Azpeitia, a Baroque complex built in honor of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, located 45 km southwest of San Sebastián. The site features his birthplace, known as the Holy House, which is preserved as a relic, and a prominent basilica with a circular dome. Next is the Hermitage of La Antigua in Zumarraga, celebrated as "the cathedral of the hermitages" and a prime example of Basque Romanesque architecture. Its interior showcases a combination of stone and wooden structures reminiscent of a ship's hull, accessible via the Urola river from Loiola. The final stop is the Sanctuary of Arantzazu in Oñati, situated in a picturesque natural setting after ascending the Arantzazu mountain pass. This sanctuary is renowned for its contemporary Basque art, featuring works from notable artists like Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida, and Néstor Basterretxea, including the notable sculpture of the 14 apostles.
